Guiding Principles for the New Building
Two years ago in the summer of 2009, the architectural firm Kahler Slater conducted an all-school listening session to enable faculty and staff to express their ideas about the project drivers they felt would define success for the desired experience within the new School of Nursing building. These guiding principles have been constant throughout the planning process:
- Healthy Space – Space that promotes health: physically, socially, and emotionally
- Respect for the Planet – An environmentally friendly building that sets green standards for campus
- Wow Factor – An impressive dramatic entry that speaks to nursing through art and warm tones
- Embodying the Wisconsin Idea – Influence that reaches beyond the classroom and into the community
- Expanding Space for Technology – Areas that incorporate the latest learning technologies while allowing flexibility for future change
- Atmosphere (Feel) – A connected, comfortable building that attracts and energizes its occupants
- Embracing Those Who Enter – A welcoming environment where citizens of the school community and visitors can easily find their way
- Conveying What Nursing Is – Space that reflects the School of Nursing’s aims to transform lives, communities, the state, and the world through the power of nursing
