Academics
PhD Program
Admission
Applications are reviewed by the Graduate Programs Committee of the School of Nursing. An important part of the admission process involves identifying a major professor for the applicant and the discipline for the minor. The careful match of faculty and student research interests is important since the major professor will supervise the student's program and provide the research training experience. Applicant interviews with potential faculty advisors are scheduled as part of the application process. Limited funding is available to cover domestic travel costs for the interview.
Admission Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in nursing from an accredited (CCNE or NLN) program with an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) on the last 60 credits of the most recent baccalaureate degree
- Verbal and quantitative aptitude scores on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) that sum to at least 1200
- Satisfactory academic references
- Copies of two original papers
- For international students whose native language is not English, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) Exam, or the International Language Testing System (IELTS) Exam is required. Minimum score for admission on the TOEFL is 550 (213 for the computer-based exam), 77 on the MELAB, or 6 on the IELTS..
Students may be accepted into the doctoral program either post-baccalaureate or post-master's. Students admitted post-baccalaureate will obtain the master's degree as part of the doctoral course preparation. Students are encouraged to enroll full-time. If part-time study is necessary, a minimum of 6 credits per semester is required.
