PhD Program

The PhD program in Nursing prepares individuals for major roles in the development, evaluation and dissemination of nursing knowledge. It is characterized by a strong emphasis on research training in nursing through an apprenticeship model. Students work closely with faculty in designing an individualized research driven program of study. Graduates with a research doctorate are prepared to assume positions as faculty as well as research scientists and research directors in a variety of educational, clinical and governmental settings.

Our Apprenticeship Model

PhD students in nursing at UW-Madison work closely with a major professor whose research matches their own interests. The major professor advises the student about courses, supervises the student’s research and acts as a channel of communication with the major department, other departments and the Graduate School.

As members of research teams, students participate in supervised research experiences, learn methods of research and manage research studies. They publish their findings in major professional journals, present their work at research conferences and seek funding to support their work while in the program. Many receive financial support for their investigations through graduate assistantships or traineeships.

An Individualized Program

PhD students plan a program of study with their major professor to support their interest and future career goals. Research areas of current students include the ethnocultural influences on pain and pain management, global environmental change on human health, coping strategies, and symptom management for patients.
